BOAT SHOES HISTORY
Men's summer locker room icon, the boat shoes has become an elegant model over the years. How did it go from a deck shoe to a city shoe? Small flashback to its origin.
WHAT IS BOAT SHOES ?
First, let's start with a simple definition.
Historically, the boat shoe also called boat moccasin is defined by a round toe, made of resistant leather and treated so as not to succumb to the inconvenience caused by salt water. It rests on a flexible and resistant sole made of rubber so as not to damage the deck of boats and containing grooves to evacuate water. It is usually navy blue, brown or black. On some models, a lace can surround the foot to ensure a foolproof hold. Sailors wore it without socks.
Today, it retains its historical codes (a round toe, in leather and a rubber sole) while being available in a casual version and multiple colors. Bare feet give way to low invisible socks for greater comfort.
WHO CREATED THE BOAT SHOES?
The history of the boat shoe begins in the 1930s. Paul Sperry, its creator and navigator at the time, used to be unstable on deck and slipped from time to time so that once, he almost fell overboard. He therefore began research to make a shoe that was non-slip, comfortable and designed to resist water. After many tests, he succeeded and ended up marketing it first to the American army.
HOW DID THE BOAT SHOE BECOME AN ICONIC OF MEN'S CLOTHES?
It was quickly noticed by the US Navy, which procured it, then followed the wealthy classes practicing boating. Then, it became more and more popular in the 60s. Over the decades, it appropriated an elegant and refined style and was worn for all occasions: city, countryside, ceremony, evening...
